Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Sunday inaugurated a major bridge as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road intersection improvement project.

Four bridges were built, with a total length of 2,874 meters and a capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour. The newly completed 2-lane bridge is 666 meters long and has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. It helps improve traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to the entrances to Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Manufacturing City.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of RTA, announced that the project at the intersection of Al Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is 90% complete.

The project provides a crucial link between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, thereby facilitating traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Street.

Once completed, the project will reduce the distance and travel time between Garn Al Sabkha Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira by 40%, from 20 to 12 minutes during peak hours.

It will also reduce the travel time of motorists coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayes Street towards Jebel Ali Port by 70%, from 21 minutes to 7 minutes.

Four bridges
The project includes the construction of four bridges. The first is a 943-meter bridge at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha and Al Asayel streets, with two lanes in each direction and a capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. It will facilitate traffic between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The second is a two-lane bridge with a length of 601 meters. It is designed to serve traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street, east towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street and north towards Al Qusais and Deira. The bridge has an estimated capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The third is a two-lane bridge spanning 664 meters. It enables smooth traffic flow by eliminating interference from vehicles from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading north to Al Yalayes Street towards Jebel Ali Port. Its capacity is estimated at 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The fourth bridge, inaugurated today (Sunday), is 666 meters long and has two lanes. Its capacity is estimated at 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The project includes 7 km of road works, including the improvement of surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It includes street lights, traffic lights, traffic systems, stormwater drainage systems and irrigation systems.

The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is part of RTA’s master plan to develop strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads, such as Al Yalayes Street and the recently completed Expo Street.

These corridors support Dubai’s mobility networks, serve numerous development projects on both sides and accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
