Abu Dhabi will ban the use of polystyrene cups and other products such as takeaway boxes from June 1, in a bid to reduce its plastic pollution.

The UAE capital will also ban cups, lids and plates made from plastic foam as part of a wider initiative to reduce the amount of single-use products.

This ban is in addition to that of single-use plastic bags, which came into force in June 2022.

Styrofoam items that are not considered single-use, such as storage boxes, coolers and trays, are exempt from the ban.

From June 1, the Dubai government will also introduce a law banning single-use plastics.
