Stores will no longer offer single-use bags to shoppers in Dubai from Saturday, as the emirate’s ban comes into force.

The ban is part of a wider initiative to completely eliminate single-use products and means stores will no longer be allowed to offer their customers carrier bags costing 25 fils at the checkout.

In addition to plastic, the ban also covers paper bags and other biodegradable materials.

According to Dubai Municipality guidelines, bags of any material with a thickness less than 57 micrometers are prohibited from June 1.

Further bans are set to come into force from next year, with a ban on polystyrene products and cotton buds from January 1.

Businesses that break the rules face a fine of up to AED 2,000.
