As part of an important collaboration to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, the UAE has committed $8 million (AED29.3 million) to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The agreement, signed at WHO headquarters in Geneva, will fund critical health initiatives in Sudan, aimed at alleviating the dire conditions faced by its population.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the UAE by Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and on behalf of WHO by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General.
This contribution is part of the UAE’s broader commitment to global humanitarian assistance and supports WHO’s efforts to provide essential health services in conflict-affected regions.
The funds will specifically target health infrastructure, emergency response capabilities and disease prevention programs.
“The work carried out by the World Health Organization in Sudan saves lives every day, and we believe it is essential to support this ongoing mission,” said Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Arab Emirates united for political affairs.
“We thank the UAE for this generous commitment. We must act together to protect the lives of the most vulnerable,” added Dr Tedros.
The UAE’s latest contribution is part of a broader $70 million commitment to address urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan, through UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.
This funding represents a substantial part of the $100 million commitment made by the UAE in April at the “International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighboring Countries”.
