UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in South Korea on Tuesday, where his plane was greeted by an honorary escort of four fighter jets before landing for his first state visit in Asia’s fourth largest economy.
Defense industry cooperation, business, investment and energy initiatives are on the agenda at a summit scheduled for Wednesday with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The two will discuss deepening their “special strategic partnership,” Yoon’s office said in a statement.
Four Air Force F-15K fighter jets escorted Sheikh Mohamed’s plane as it entered the South Korean defense identification zone and landed at a military airfield just south of the capital, Seoul, Yoon’s office said.
The UAE president returns the favor after Yoon’s state visit to Abu Dhabi early last year, when the UAE promised to invest $30 billion in South Korean companies in areas covering nuclear energy, defense, hydrogen and solar energy.
On Tuesday, His Highness met with leaders of some of South Korea’s largest business conglomerates, including Jay Y. Lee of Samsung Electronics, Chey Tae-won of SK Group and ES Chung of Hyundai Motor Group.
South Korea has already had close commercial ties with the UAE for more than a decade, having previously won contracts to build nuclear reactors, including the Barakah power plant.
On social media, the UAE President said: “UAE-Korea relations are a distinguished model of positive and constructive relations, and the UAE is keen to expand its horizons for benefit and development of the two countries. »
