The midday break is set to begin as the UAE seeks to protect workers from the outdoors amid rising summer temperatures.
Starting Saturday, June 15, businesses face fines of up to AED 50,000 if employees are caught working outdoors, directly under the sun, between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., according to regulations relating to lunch breaks.
Companies will be fined AED 5,000 per employee failing to comply with the rules, rising to AED 50,000 if multiple workers break the rules.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization is implementing this break to provide a safe working environment for workers during the UAE’s hot summer months.
The rules last until September 15 and this is the 20th consecutive year that the lunch break has been in effect.
The ministry has also set up 6,000 rest stations across the UAE for delivery drivers to use during these hours.
